Editor’s note: The below story explains why Jack Nicklaus began wearing yellow when competing on Sundays, most famously in the final round of his victory in the 1986 Masters. Today, he keeps that legacy alive through ‘Play Yellow,’ a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals campaign with support from Jack and Barbara Nicklaus to raise $100 million to help the 10 million kids treated at local children’s hospitals each year. Multiple PGA TOUR players serve as ‘Play Yellow’ ambassadors, including former Nicklaus Award winner Chris Gotterup and Ohio native Justin Lower, who were both announced as ambassadors this week.In the years since Jack Nicklaus won an improbable sixth Masters title in 1986, images of him charging to victory with a closing 65 have become iconic. The green jacket Nicklaus was awarded late that warm spring afternoon in Georgia went perfectly with the yellow shirt he wore in the final round.

Many players and caddies are either wearing yellow items of clothing or a yellow ribbon during the final round of the Memorial Tournament, but why?

It’s to help raise money for charity, with a $100m goal over five years hoping to be raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The ‘Play Yellow‘ movement is spearheaded by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus and in partnership with the PGA Tour and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. It has been running since 2019 and players in all rounds of The Memorial do their bit by wearing yellow shirts, caps or ribbons.

Masters 2023: What happened to Jack Nicklaus’ famous yellow 1986 Masters shirt?

Jack Nicklaus woke up in his Augusta rental house on the morning of April 13, 1986, without a care in the world. Hours away from teeing off in the final round of that year’s Masters, he was four shots behind Greg Norman, with another 13 players either tied with or ahead of him. This would be a pleasant day on one of his favorite courses, nothing more.

Nicklaus dug through his suitcase and found a tailored yellow shirt — pointed collars, long placket, Golden Bear logo on the closing flap of the left pocket. One of a dozen, maybe a hundred, that Nicklaus owned in a range of hues. Choice made, he and his wife Barbara left the house for Augusta National.

A few hours later, that yellow shirt would match perfectly with the green jacket draped over it.

Even the weekend golfers understand the cachet of a birdie putt.

They can make a couple of pars, a half-dozen bogeys, several double bogeys and a whole lot of “others,” but when asked how they played, the answer hopefully will be, “Hey, I made a birdie!”

Birdie putts will be even more meaningful for 44 South Florida PGA Professionals during today’s Honda Classic Cares Yellow Birdie Bash at PGA National Resort.

The 22 two-man teams are receiving pledges for every birdie they make during an 81-hole marathon on the Staples and Match courses. They are hoping to surpass the $234,000 the Southern Ohio PGA raised during a similar event last year that was split between the section and Jack and Barbara Nicklaus’ Play Yellow campaign that has a goal of raising $100 million for children’s hospitals in five years.

For each of the past three days at the Sanderson Farms Championship, players were encouraged to wear particular colors, whether it was pink on Friday for breast cancer awareness or university colors on Saturday.

Yellow was Sunday’s color, specifically “Play Yellow,” which is a PGA Tour-backed initiative spearheaded by Jack Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, that is designed to bring the entire golf world together to help the 10 million kids treated at local children’s hospitals each year.

If you’ve tuned into this weekend’s Honda Classic, it’s likely you’ve noticed the tournament has taken on a distinct pigment: yellow. It’s everywhere — the flags, the shirts, and yes, even the ribbons.

The PGA Tour’s longest-running title-sponsored event is celebrating its 40th anniversary this weekend at PGA National in style, ringing in the beginning of spring with a fittingly shaded honorarium for its host, Jack Nicklaus. On Sunday, many of the tournament’s top players are sporting yellow attire, and dozens more are wearing a small, yellow ribbon affixed to their hat, bag, or shirt.

But the yellow attire is not only to pay tribute to the Golden Bear. More accurately, it is for a cause close to Nicklaus’ heart.

Jack Nicklaus has pulled off many firsts at the Masters. The 2020 Masters brings another.

At the ceremonial opening tee shot at Augusta National early Thursday morning, Nicklaus wore his signature Play Yellow cap and a limited-edition glove GOLF.com co-designed with Asher.

After he and Gary Player struck their shots, the six-time Masters champion signed both his hat and glove, which he is auctioning off to support the Children’s Miracle Network’s Play Yellow campaign. Shortly after the ceremony, the auction went live on eBay with a starting bid of $500. All proceeds will benefit the donor’s local children’s hospital.

Here’s why PGA Tour Pros are wearing yellow ribbons on Sunday at the Memorial

Jack Nicklaus’ influence at the Memorial Tournament is unmistakable. From the golf course (which he designed), to its tournament set-up, to the manual leader boards operated around the course during tournament week (even with no fans on the grounds), to the white caddie shirts to the milkshakes in the clubhouse, there’s hardly an aspect of the event that Nicklaus hasn’t impacted.

In turn, those competing in the event appreciate everything that Nicklaus has done for the game. And as a sign of their respect, those playing on Sunday wore a yellow ribbon in a salute to Nicklaus and one of his biggest off-the-course pursuit.

In 2019, Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, helped launch the “Play Yellow” campaign in conjunction with the PGA Tour and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to raise funds pediatric care that insurance programs don’t cover. Their initial goal was to bring in $100 million over five years.

Except in team competitions like the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, professional golfers don’t wear uniforms. Still, some become linked to clothing of a specific color.

Tiger Woods is known for wearing red shirts on Sundays. Gary Player’s penchant for all-black outfits earned him the nickname “The Black Knight.” Golf’s greatest-ever major champion, Jack Nicklaus, is famous for his love of yellow — an association he has used, along with his wife of 60 years, Barbara, to support their longstanding, passionate charitable commitment to children’s health in general and to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) in particular.

Jack Nicklaus has made the Memorial Tournament one of the TOUR’s finest events, and the Play Yellow campaign will do some amazing things for the Children’s Miracle Network.

A little over two months ago, Jack Nicklaus, Barbara Nicklaus, PGA TOUR commissioner Jay Monahan, and John Lauck, President and CEO of Children’s Miracle Network, announced the Play Yellow for Children’s Hospitals campaign, a charitable effort to raise $100 million in five years to support the medical needs of children across the country.

“It’s really hard to not be involved when the Nicklaus family is behind it,” Commissioner Monahan said about Play Yellow.

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, in conjunction with the PGA Tour, have launched a campaign that calls on the golf community to “Play Yellow” to raise money for children’s hospitals. The goal of the initiative is to raise $100 million for children’s hospitals over the next five years.

The Nicklaus’s have been active in their support of children’s hospitals for many years, working closely with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by helping fund pediatric care that is not covered by insurance programs. Now, the Nicklaus family and its group of funding partners are asking the golf world to help out in the cause to raise money for these pediatric care programs via the Play Yellow campaign.
